Spanish 17th century cassetta frame

An antique Spanish 17th century cassetta frame with polychrome frieze and parcel gilding.  The original water gilded rails are worn, consistent with its age, and show a warmth from the bole colours revealed underneath.  The hand painted faux marble design to the frieze with its mixed palette adds an artistic element to this decorative frame.

The cassetta frame's form first appeared in Egyptian tomb paintings with different widths of line, and a decorative central panel; Greek vases featured stylized leaf and flower borders, both these early types of 'frame' help to focus attention onto the painted scene, and to separate it from the real, exterior world.  There are many different ways the cassetta frame has been presented, some friezes have punchwork to the gilding which creates texture and movement for the spectator who moves in front of the frame; carved friezes give a depth of embellishment; pastiglia decoration is achieved by dripping liquid gesso leaving a raised design which is then generally surrounded by punchwork to further accentuate the pastiglia.
