16th century Netherlandish frame
We were commissioned to produce a reproduction of a 16th century Netherlandish frame for a painting by French 16th century artist Antoine Caron. Using the antique frame as reference the new frame's scale was increased to be more proportional to the large painting. As you can see from the images the entire frieze was decorated in ornate scrolling foliage and two sections of the frame, the inner edge and small flat just beyond the frieze, were gilded this helps create a border and further define the frame. Careful ageing to the painted surfaces and gilded areas softened the appearance so not to detract from the artwork but to keep a balance between the frame and painting.
